Arline Mathieu’s art, which draws inspiration from her decades-long Buddhist meditation practice and from the natural world, is further informed by science and world or life events. Her drawing-paintings on view at Folklore are from a series influenced by scientific discoveries of the presence of water on Mars and on the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. The series explores the possibility of forms of life arising in these or other watery environments. With ink, watercolor, fine-line pens, and color pencils, Arline presents a universe in flux, with phenomena emerging and ever-changing.

Arline’s work has been exhibited and is in collections primarily in the United States. She has a degree in textile and design from the University of Rhode Island, was an MFA student in painting at Michigan State University, and has a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the New School for Social Research in New York City. Arline grew up not far from the coast in Rhode Island and has now lived several decades in a small rural town on the coast of Northern California.
