SEAN W. SPELLMAN

Sean W. Spellman is a New England native who spent nearly a decade of his formative years living and working in various American cities: Portland, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and now in the sleepy coastal town of Westerly, RI. He has crossed the country more than two dozen times, many of them solo, documenting his journeys in paintings, drawings, photographs, and song. These "interpretations" serve as self-proclaimed personal inspiration to "keep moving" and as conceptual documents of the many places a person might dream of calling home. His work has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Dwell, and Rolling Stone, and can be seen in person in collaborations with recognizable brands like Gap, Urban Outfitters, and Rivian. Sean’s painting and mural work is experienced in many of the world’s most interesting new boutique hotels: Ceylon Sliders in southern Sri Lanka, Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach, Marram in Montauk, and several Freehand Hotels, to name a few.  His alter ego, Sgt Joe Roberts, has documented his own public art in locations from the Mojave to New Delhi. His signature depiction is that of a rolling sea and golden sunset, a traditional abstraction in minimalist form.

"I am attempting to create pieces that become meaningful to people by combining the simplicity of colors and shapes in my work in the most rudimentary way, sometimes in context with design, with sound, or directly with other artists’ creations… all with a desire that my paintings are able to coexist with ease across all spectrums, in varied settings, and that they enter into the perception of a vast consciousness of interpretive viewers. Plainly, I want my work to make people feel good, myself included. I try to do that by leaving as much as possible to be imagined, in hopes that the Source is given the opportunity to come through in each of us, and a painting is seen in a uniquely individualized way, depending on your mood, your preferences, or your life experience."
