Below the surface, we glimpse another world. One that is different from our own, yet unmistakably familiar. We are weightless. We are held. We are somehow closer to ourselves. The blue is in us, and around us. Waves tumble our thoughts away, revealing peace and presence. A memory, a dream, an effortless pull. The blue summons us, then sends us back to shore.
Oriana Poindexter is an American-Italian photographic artist and marine scientist whose academic background spans photography, fisheries, and marine conservation. She dives, photographs, and collects specimens to create photo-based works that document the ocean’s shifting ecosystems. Her process, rooted in both traditional and alternative photographic techniques, results in light-formed records that engage viewers in contemplating the relationship between humans and the sea.

Arline Mathieu’s art, which draws inspiration from her decades-long Buddhist meditation practice and from the natural world, is further informed by science and world or life events. Her drawing-paintings on view at Folklore are from a series influenced by scientific discoveries of the presence of water on Mars and on the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. The series explores the possibility of forms of life arising in these or other watery environments. With ink, watercolor, fine-line pens, and color pencils, Arline presents a universe in flux, with phenomena emerging and ever-changing.

Maureen Meyer is a visual artist and painter living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She is inspired by her background in fashion and textile design. Her process begins with fabric experimentations, working with indigo dye and earth pigments while using various resist dye and painting techniques. She often incorporates aspects of nature and flora to create a resist pattern on the fabric. The materials are then draped and stitched, composing a balance of tension and delicacy with a sculptural quality. In this series of paintings the materials guide her process, allowing the shape and texture of the textiles to evolve naturally while accentuating the inherent beauty of the fabric.

Sean W. Spellman is a New England native who spent nearly a decade of his formative years living and working in various American cities: Portland, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and now in the sleepy coastal town of Westerly, RI. He has crossed the country more than two dozen times, many of them solo, documenting his journeys in paintings, drawings, photographs, and song. These "interpretations" serve as self-proclaimed personal inspiration to "keep moving" and as conceptual documents of the many places a person might dream of calling home.

CARMEN SALAZAR
A curious hybrid of urban and rural, Carmen Salazar is a recipe that calls for equal parts concrete and pasture, glass and steel and rough-hewn beams. Growing up, she spent her time shuttling between her family's farm in West Virginia and the vibrant, diverse cultures of her home in Washington, D.C. Her father's Puerto Rican background and mother's Slovak heritage further instilled a deep appreciation for diversity in her from an early age. Bridging distinct worlds and honoring their unique elements governs her life outlook and directly informs her artistic practice.
